1. Vector Math vs. Pixel Grids Explained

When preparing barcodes for professional offset, flexographic, or digital printing, choosing the wrong file format is the #1 cause of unreadable, rejected print runs:

Specification Raster PNG Vector SVG
Underlying Data Fixed grid of colored pixels Geometric XML path vectors (shapes & coordinates)
Scaling Limit Pixelates and blurs when enlarged Infinitely scalable from a postage stamp to a highway billboard
File Size 50 KB – 5 MB depending on resolution Extremely lightweight (~4 KB to 12 KB)
Prepress Separation Requires color profiling in Photoshop Direct spot color and CMYK separation in Illustrator/InDesign

2. 300 DPI Resolution Math for Print

If your production workflow necessitates a raster PNG (for example, in web banners, email templates, or basic Word documents), you must guarantee a minimum optical resolution of 300 Dots Per Inch (DPI) at the physical printed dimensions:

Pixel Dimension = Physical Size (Inches) × 300 DPI
Example for a 2 x 2 inch label:
2.0 × 300 = 600 × 600 pixels minimum.

On QRPoint, you can download PNGs up to 3000 × 3000 pixels, ensuring razor-sharp clarity up to 10 x 10 inches at full commercial print fidelity.

3. Importing QR SVGs into Illustrator & InDesign

For high-end packaging and editorial layouts, always export as Vector SVG from QRPoint. In Adobe Illustrator or InDesign:

  1. Place the .svg directly onto your artboard.
  2. Because QRPoint generates clean, grouped XML path objects, you can adjust the stroke, apply Pantone spot inks, or verify that the fill color uses pure 100% Key Black (C:0 M:0 Y:0 K:100) rather than a four-color muddy rich black.
  3. Preserve the mandatory 2-to-4 module quiet zone border around the perimeter.

4. Prepress Traps: Bleed, Rich Black, and Substrates

Avoid these three catastrophic print errors:

  • Dot Gain on Uncoated Paper: Kraft paper and newsprint absorb liquid inks, expanding printed modules by 5% to 15%. This can bridge the tiny gaps between modules. Use Error Correction Level H on porous stocks.
  • Four-Color Misregistration: Printing fine QR modules across Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black plates often causes color fringing if paper drifts by even 0.1mm. Always output barcodes in single-plate spot black.
  • Gloss Laminate Glare: High-gloss celloglaze coatings reflect overhead store spotlights into smartphone lenses, blinding the camera sensor. Opt for matte or soft-touch finishes on retail packaging.
