What Makes a QR Code Unreadable?

Before printing thousands of flyers or product packaging boxes, understand the three physical factors that cause camera optical scanning failures:

1. Color Contrast Ratio (Minimum 4.5:1)

Mobile cameras do not perceive colors the way human eyes do; they convert the image into a grayscale threshold. If your foreground color (e.g. pastel blue) has a similar relative luminance to your background (e.g. light gray), camera edge-detection algorithms cannot differentiate data modules from quiet zones.

2. Color Inversion Traps

Standard barcode sensors look for dark modules on a light background. While the ISO standard technically permits reverse contrast (white modules on black background), budget Android sensors, third-party barcode readers, and warehouse scanners frequently fail on inverted codes. Always default to dark-on-light.

3. Excessive Center Logo Sizes

Inserting a brand logo in the center intentionally obscures data modules. If your logo covers more than 20% of the surface area and you remain on Error Correction Level L or M, the barcode becomes mathematically unrecoverable. Always pair embedded logos with Error Correction Level H (30% redundancy).
